And so my absence continues…
Dear everyone,/howdy!
I dropped a line on Twitter earlier this week about still being sick and how I would explain things here somewhere after Thursday. Things took a modest dramatic turn shortly after, and I ended up being admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.
So, what’s the deal, Neil?! Let me start with the good news: after years of trying, I am finally [insert pause for dramatic effect] pregnant!
The crappy news: I’m one of those women suffering from HG (Hyperemesis Gravidarum). Now, whenever I tell this to someone (not that I’ve told a whole lot of people yet), I get a somewhat “OH, but all pregnant women are nauseous!”. Yeah, there’s a difference.
Distinguishing between morning sickness and hyperemesis gravidarum:
Morning Sickness: | Hyperemesis Gravidarum: |
Nausea sometimes accompanied by vomiting | Nausea accompanied by severe vomiting |
Nausea that subsides at 12 weeks or soon after | Nausea that does not subside |
Vomiting that does not cause severe dehydration | Vomiting that causes severe dehydration |
Vomiting that allows you to keep some food down | Vomiting that does not allow you to keep any food down |

For the past 3.5 weeks, I’ve been nauseous practically non-stop and vomited up until the point of damaging my oesophagus and coughing up blood. Eating is a nightmare. Drinking is a nightmare. My ritual of drinking tea three times a day is gone. Just thinking about tea makes me gag. There have been a lot of days where the most I could get into my system without it coming out again was half a banana and a glass of water.
Being completely exhausted and apparently dehydrated, I was admitted to the hospital and put on an IV drip this week. This didn’t solve much, though. I’m still nauseous 24/7 and am hoping the new anti-nausea meds I got today will finally work.
Seeing my main activities are sleeping, lying down, vomiting or trying to shove food in and keeping it down, there still won’t be any blogging activity from my side until I can at least read properly again. So far, reading is making me extra nauseous, so I haven’t done a lot of it. I’ve sent some letters to publishers and authors whom I still owe an ARC review. If I haven’t written you a letter, I hope you’re reading this and know I will get to it whenever I can again. For now, my health comes first, though.
I can’t put any timeframe on this whole ordeal but I’m sincerely hoping it will get better 3-7 weeks from now, and I can be more excited about having a baby in general! It’s pretty hard if you’re feeling like shit every day for almost a month now.
Thanks to my awesome friends for listening to me whine about this and/or having supported me in general for the past couple of weeks. You know who you are! ❤
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope it gets easier soon!

Oh my goodness, congratulations (on being pregnant – yay!) and oh no!
I only had to go to hospital once because of unending vomiting (I couldn’t even sip water, it started the retching off again), so I consider myself very lucky. I felt nauseous the first 4 months, practically all the time, but only had that one trip to the hospital, so I don’t complain about it! Looking at a computer screen during those months ramped up my nausea massively, so I understand why you need to keep away from the blog.
Feel free to poke anyone who says “Oh but everyone gets morning sickness” in the eye. They have no idea.
Keeping everything crossed that this passes as quickly as possible and clears up completely when you hit the 2nd trimester. Then you can go about being glowing and happy 🙂
P.S. Thinking about tea also made me feel ill. This will pass!

Thanks Claire! :-*
Oh, sipping water is the worst! You probably had the same thing back then! It’s absolutely miserable. Nobody ever tells you this can happen. All those glowing pregnant women sighs. I read that Kate Middleton had it too, though! Yes, the computer screen is NOT my friend right now ;).
Haha, I’m too tired for poking but throwing them the death glare should do too ;).
Thank you so much for sharing! I’m almost 10 weeks now, so I’m hoping 2017 will mark the beginning of better times :-*.

Congrats! Do feel better! I get pre-eclampsyia when I’m pregnant (which is why I only have 2 kids), so I totally get it that what you’re going through isn’t normal! Hope you respond well to the IV and the meds! Don’t worry about us, take care of yourself!

Thank you!! Oh dear, that’s a serious condition! I remember one of the first episodes of ER was about a woman dying of pre-eclampsia, and it always stuck with me for some reason. You’d almost wonder why so many babies are still born every day with all this crap 😉

Yeah, luckily doctors know a lot more about how to treat most of these conditions than they did! Hang in there!

Congratulations! I had hyperemisis for 2 of my 3 pregnancies and was hospitalised. It’s so horrible and don’t think people realise that it’s nothing like morning sickness. I lost so much weight that I was 2 dress sizes smaller by the end of the pregnancy. My reason the last time was twins!!! Have you had scan to check for twins? Do not worry that it affects the baby though-I got slimmer but my twins were born 10 days early and were both 3.6kg. Good luck!!

Thank you!! Oh crap! Most people don’t. I’ve got friends who keep wanting to come on over while I have to explain every time that I really can’t handle visitors. The puking your guts out and inability to eat or drink is just a nightmare. I lost weight as well, but little seahorse is doing a-okay so I try not to worry about that part too much indeed (although the doctors do!). Ha! They checked for twins when I was 6 weeks already because of the extreme nausea. It’s just one, though. Happily sucking his thumb on my last ultrasound while his mom is feeling like shit ;). I can’t even imagine how hard carrying twins must be like when you get the double amount of this! Women rock! ❤

Actually, here’s the truth. Moving helps a lot. I ran through all of my pregnancies. But I am a running coach. Walking helps tremendously though. Give it a shot.
Many blessings to you Anne!

Hahaha, oh, that’s tongue in cheek stuff alright!
I’m not even allowed to do any household chores at the moment (if I could) but I swear, as soon as I feel better again, I’m gonna walk the shit out of it! (literally as well hopefully, I’m SO constipated…).
Thank you!! :-*

It’s a blessing, really, thank you!! Blessingsdon’t always come cheap, though, apparently ;).11th of July, so about 6.5 more months to go, hopefully without nausea soon. Definitely <3. Being able to guilt-trip this kid later on about making his mother feel so terrible is something to look forward to as well ;). JK, JK! Or am I?!

You do what you have to, little mama. I had nausea 24/7 for about 2.5 months, but I could eat pretzel sticks and drink flat cola. Not being able to keep anything down is serious business! I am glad they finally put you in the hospital, so you can have an IV. Sending all the good energies and tons of hugs. And then some more hugs. 💙💚💛💜💖

Anne, I’m so happy for you. This is one of life’s great adventures! I have four children, each pregnancy being completely different from each other. While I was pregnant with my third child, I started going into labor at six months. From that point on, I was in and out of the hospital and on total bed rest for three months. It was very scary and difficult, but I got a lot of people to help me with my two other young kids, and people brought us meals. I was unable to stand for more than a few minutes without contractions starting up. But it really was worth it. My son was born healthy and he was a very easy baby. My son just celebrated his 18th birthday, last Sunday.
You will get through this. Ask for help, and remember that you get a lovely baby at the end of this! Best wishes.

oh my goodness….but congratulations and I hope the iv and hospital rest will help and you feel a bit better soon! my experience of pregnancy wasn’t very good either, I had pre eclampsia and hospital for bed rest and my son was born by emergency section at 29 weeks….however, he is now a strapping 24 year old! all the best to you xxx

Congrats on the pregnancy but I certainly hope they can do something to help you feel better. My sister was extremely sick for most of her pregnancy but it didn’t get to the point she was dehydrated but certainly was sick more than a “normal” pregnancy.

Gosh- firstly I hope you start to feel better soon- and secondly MASSIVE congratulations!!!! So happy for you! That’s amazing news 🙂 oddly I’d heard of this cos Kate Middleton had it or something similar, so they blasted the news with awareness raising stuff both times she was pregnant- again, I really hope this gets easier for you, but definitely take it easy now, and don’t worry about us, we’ll all be here when you get back!! And in the meantime we miss you!!!

THAT SUCKS about the HG. I only know about this third and even fourth hand, so I don’t have anything useful to add. But I hope things get easier for you, and quickly! Let us know if there is anything we can do from a distance– sending ❤ your way.

I’m so sorry you’re so sick… I hope you aren’t too sick over the holidays (or at least not all the time..) and got some good relaxing and family time in, and I hope your family is doing well! ♥ Best wishes and Happy Holidays, Anne+Co! ♥♥

I am 10 weeks pregnant today and have been admitted to the hospital twice for dehydration and malnutrition. HG has effected me since about 5 1/2 weeks. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m jealous of people who can drink a glass of water! It’s hard to be excited about pregnancy when you have to sleep on your bathroom floor most nights.

Oh man, I literally know how you feel. I’m almost 15 weeks now and it still hasn’t gone away. Been having it since 6 weeks exactly. That seems to be the turning point for most women with the Hcg hormone going on a mad spree in there. Did you get any medication to take at home? I did and it helps with the endless vomiting but not with the nausea. Everything food/drink related still feels like having to eat a turd :(. Hugs! Hang in there, I can’t tell you it’ll get better with time but at least your mind is being forced to having to deal with it after a while. Mine has reached some sort of fudged up state of acceptance now.

Hi, just out of my second HG pregnancy, I’m sure you are all litterate about all there is to know about HG by now (are u due soon?), but to me it worked one way: zophren zophren and more zophren… Have a look at my post on hg if you get a chance, hoping to get to it on a post at some point about B12 and HG, but if u can out of curiosity, ask your doc to add it to a blood test. Congrats!!
