As book lovers, we all have a favourite to-go-to genre that we love to read more than any other. Drew thought it was interesting to see what those genres were for other people and created this fabulous tag for it! For those who don’t know Drew, I’m going to be his wingman here and say:
He has a fantastic blog with book reviews, poetry, intriguing guest posts, and the occasional ARC rant. He loves animals, likes taking long walks on the beach and reading in the dark on his Kindle, and…is the perfect gentleman in First Person Shooters. Okay, so I might’ve made up that beach part, but who knows, Drew is full of surprises! Hence, you should totally check out his blog.

The Questions:

1). What’s your favourite genre?

After some careful consideration, thinking I didn’t have a favourite genre at all, my end conclusion is Fantasy. Every time I see a nice Fantasy book cover, I’m sold. Every time I hear about a great new Fantasy book, I picture myself reading it.

2). Who’s your favourite author from the genre?

GRRRRRRRRRR Martin (pun intended) is definitely high on my list because his A Song of Ice and Fire series is simply majestic. And fuck it, I’m counting Neil Gaiman as a Fantasy author as well even though his books have a different vibe to it, The Gaiman Effect, as physicists like to call it.*

3). What is it about the genre that keeps pulling you back?

The shiny colourful covers? Hehe, no, well, yes also but it’s mostly the stories. Anything is possible really. You can fly, throw fireballs at innocent bystanders, defeat the dragon’s keeper to the young maiden’s tower and then just claim her hand with the flick of your sword. It’s the adult version of children’s stories, really! Children’s stories with more violence and, depending on which author your choosing, more sex. So if I say I like my Fantasy without sex, does that mean I actually just want to read a Children’s book??

4). What’s the book that started your love for your favourite genre?

Weaveworld by Clive Barker is my earliest memory of reading an adult Fantasy book.

I was about twelve years old at the time, had no idea what it was really about, but maaan, I was HOOKED! Magic carpets, a weird witch who I remember as a horror version of Ursula from Disney’s The Little Mermaid, magic…what’s not to love here?! (I’ll probably think it sucks if I re-read it now).

5). If you had to recommend at least one book from your favourite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading that genre, what book would you choose and why?

Bwaha! It says at least one book in this question! 

For true newbies who want to begin at the beginning, I recommend starting the Dragonlance series by Weis&Hickman. Or you know, just the first book, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, and see what you make of it. Definitely not the best Fantasy books out there for me, but they supply you with the basics.

For someone who wants to try the genre but not get into the D&D zone or read about trolls, orcs, and elves: I can highly recommend The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. It’s a somewhat more modern take on the Fantasy genre. The books are massive but you can take your sweet time because so does Mr Rothfuss himself when it comes to writing the third and last book in the series.

And if you don’t feel like reading 1200 pages OR testing your agility with the roll of a die, I can recommend trying Raymond E. Feist’s Magician. With its 500-600 pages, otherworldliness, yet simplicity when it comes to the characters, this is definitely something for the beginning Fantasy reader.

6). Why do you read?

Reading has been an addiction for me ever since I was a toddler. Every book contains a movie you can play in your head, and I think that’s what I love most about it. It boosts my own imagination, makes me sleep better, calms me down whenever I’m really stressed. Plus, I learn a lot from reading. I’ve learned other languages through reading. Met fascinating people through reading. Seriously, what’s NOT to love about reading? It brings colour to dull days and lets you escape into another world, only to return safe and sound whenever it pleases you.
