This Is My Genre, Tell Me Yours Book Tag

this-is-my-genre-tell-me-yours-book-tag-1

As book lovers, we all have a favourite to-go-to genre that we love to read more than any other. Drew thought it was interesting to see what those genres were for other people and created this fabulous tag for it! For those who don’t know Drew, I’m going to be his wingman here and say:Untitled.jpg
He has a fantastic blog with book reviews, poetry, intriguing guest posts, and the occasional ARC rant. He loves animals, likes taking long walks on the beach and reading in the dark on his Kindle, and…is the perfect gentleman in First Person Shooters. Okay, so I might’ve made up that beach part, but who knows, Drew is full of surprises! Hence, you should totally check out his blog.

The Rules:

  • Credit badass Drew @The Tattooed Book Geek as the creator of the tag, either use the created tag name graphic or create your own and link back to his blog
  • Answer the questions
  • Tag as many people as you want

The Questions:

1). What’s your favourite genre?

After some careful consideration, thinking I didn’t have a favourite genre at all, my end conclusion is Fantasy. Every time I see a nice Fantasy book cover, I’m sold. Every time I hear about a great new Fantasy book, I picture myself reading it.

2). Who’s your favourite author from the genre?

GRRRRRRRRRR Martin (pun intended) is definitely high on my list because his A Song of Ice and Fire series is simply majestic. And fuck it, I’m counting Neil Gaiman as a Fantasy author as well even though his books have a different vibe to it, The Gaiman Effect, as physicists like to call it.*

3). What is it about the genre that keeps pulling you back?

The shiny colourful covers? Hehe, no, well, yes also but it’s mostly the stories. Anything is possible really. You can fly, throw fireballs at innocent bystanders, defeat the dragon’s keeper to the young maiden’s tower and then just claim her hand with the flick of your sword. It’s the adult version of children’s stories, really! Children’s stories with more violence and, depending on which author your choosing, more sex. So if I say I like my Fantasy without sex, does that mean I actually just want to read a Children’s book??

4). What’s the book that started your love for your favourite genre?

Weaveworld by Clive Barker is my earliest memory of reading an adult Fantasy book.

I was about twelve years old at the time, had no idea what it was really about, but maaan, I was HOOKED! Magic carpets, a weird witch who I remember as a horror version of Ursula from Disney’s The Little Mermaid, magic…what’s not to love here?! (I’ll probably think it sucks if I re-read it now).

5). If you had to recommend at least one book from your favourite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading that genre, what book would you choose and why?

Bwaha! It says at least one book in this question! giphy (14).gif

For true newbies who want to begin at the beginning, I recommend starting the Dragonlance series by Weis&Hickman. Or you know, just the first book, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, and see what you make of it. Definitely not the best Fantasy books out there for me, but they supply you with the basics.

For someone who wants to try the genre but not get into the D&D zone or read about trolls, orcs, and elves: I can highly recommend The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. It’s a somewhat more modern take on the Fantasy genre. The books are massive but you can take your sweet time because so does Mr Rothfuss himself when it comes to writing the third and last book in the series.

And if you don’t feel like reading 1200 pages OR testing your agility with the roll of a die, I can recommend trying Raymond E. Feist’s Magician. With its 500-600 pages, otherworldliness, yet simplicity when it comes to the characters, this is definitely something for the beginning Fantasy reader.

6). Why do you read?

Reading has been an addiction for me ever since I was a toddler. Every book contains a movie you can play in your head, and I think that’s what I love most about it. It boosts my own imagination, makes me sleep better, calms me down whenever I’m really stressed. Plus, I learn a lot from reading. I’ve learned other languages through reading. Met fascinating people through reading. Seriously, what’s NOT to love about reading? It brings colour to dull days and lets you escape into another world, only to return safe and sound whenever it pleases you.

    • Fist bumps! 😀 I’ve got the entire Dragonlance series and it’s very old school but still enjoyable! Also, I just tagged you for this 😉

      • I like old school series 😀 I find it interesting to read to sometimes undertand new ones better, same for old tvshows! / OHHHhhhh thanks I hadn’t seen! Will do next week! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

        • My thoughts too! That’s why I bought the entire series a couple of years ago. And only read the first book so far :’). Old TV shows are the best! That’s because I only added it later on XD. I thought you had to be in there as a fantasy fan yourself! But whenever you feel like it (or don’t) ma chérie! 😀

  3. I love the reasons why you read. It is funny, I would say the SciFi is my go to genre, but I actually read more Fantasy. Weird. I like my Fantasy sans romance, too. Fab tag! Drew is to be commended. 🙂

I saw Feist’s book in the bookstore yesterday. Almost got it.

    • Let’s see what he has to say about that himself XD. D’awwe! Just buy it next time ;). Unless it’s like book 12 in one of his series of course…

  5. I think you did better with this than me haha. I love the graphic! So perfect for picking fantasy. And yeah, that Drew is alright 😉

Gaiman totally counts as fantasy FYI 💖 Really good fantasy! I am sad to tell you I have never read Weaveworld. hangs head in shame

You have a few titles on here I will need to add. Fabulous post as always. You make everything so fun!!!

    • Hmpf, no way! Thank you!! ❤ I believe I spent a good hour on trying to get the text right, but then said feck it, no one’s going to stare at it for that long anyways :’). Aha! Delicious fantasy ❤ :D. I think I only read Weaveworld because it was in my library. I saw the cover, and being a cover whore at the tender age of 12 already, went for it right away ;). Thank you so much!! ❤ I definitely try! 😀

  8. Great recommendations Anne! I love high fantasy, although I have to admit my taste over the last several years have veered toward urban fantasy. 💁🏻

  9. Hahahah the Gaiman Effect. I need to get into his mind by reading his books soon! So many in my TBR, yet I have none on my bookshelves. :O

Loved the recommendations too. The more adult fantasy type of fiction; something I don’t see a lot of people read or recommend out here! Added both the D&D and Magician (while The Name of The Wind has been picking up dust in my TBR; especially because of my fear of the wait for the final book…)

    • 😀 I haven’t read enough of him BY FAR! But he has such an imaginative mind, hiiighly recommended for sure! Thank you! 🙂 Yes, there’s a whole lot of YA Fantasy out there, which is great as well obviously, but reading a Fantasy for ‘grown-ups’ can be very rewarding (and don’t feature any love triangles 😉 ). Awesome! Hahaha, yeah, I’ve almost forgot what happened in book 2 again because of the loooooong wait sighs.

  11. Haven’t heard about the majority of this books… this is a genre I have no idea about :O Always curious though!

  12. Hahaha that intro was great- drew could use that as a dating profile! Hahaha gosh I love that GR pun! And Neil gaiman is awesome- agree about the gaiman effect lol. Ooh yes- agree that’s why I love fantasy too. Haha- is sort of like wanting to read a children’s book- but what’s wrong with that?? Haha yes rothfuss is taking his sweet time (seems be a trend of fantasy authors) love this post!

    Liked by 2 people

    • I don’t know if Drew is single or not, but yes, he could and would probably attract lots of women with it as well XD. I knew you’d be appreciative of a good pun <3. Or a bad one for that matter ;). Oh, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Children’s books! I almost picked those as my favourite genre, but then thought I’d play it cool instead, aaaaight! Thank you!!

  13. You nailed that tag, girl! 🙂 ❤
Love the description for Drew- it sounds like a dating ad in a local newspaper! 😀 I’m sure Drew will be thrilled with this advertisement! 😀

Danielle says it right- you do make everything so much more fun! 🙂

  14. Awesome tag Anne, definitely have to agree with Liz and Danielle, you sure know how to make things fun!😀

That’s a top quality shout out to thanks, I’m not really into FPS games though, more third person action/rpg games and I prefer the countryside to beachs!😂

Oh man, Ggggrrrrrr Martin – I offer you the highest of fives for that pun!✋

The Rothfuss one wasn’t to shabby either and it’s definitely a great recommendation for the genre.

Ha, adults version of children’s books, interesting description, it’s just an awesome genre!😀

    Liked by 1 person

    • bows 😀 Thank you! Ah, damnit, I knew I should’ve picked another game genre :’). FPS’s suck anyways XD. Hahaha! :’) :’)
      Thank you!! high fives back
It is, I should really start reading more of it again :). Ridiculous how I’ve hardly read any real Fantasy ever since I started my blog!

      Liked by 1 person

      • Ha, you remembered gaming, in your advanced years that’s good enough!😂

Most fantasy books are so long that’s the only real problem for blogs and also one of the main reasons why I don’t review much, slow reader but fantasy books are all so huge!😂

Here’s hoping for The Stone Door or whatever Rothfuss is calling it for a release next year and from Ggggrrrr Martin to, I think we all need to request ARC’s when those two bad boys get released!😂

        Liked by 1 person

        • Yeah, DUH! XD Sigh, I guess you’ve got a fair point there ;). I think that’s one of the reasons why I didn’t start any new Fantasy books lately. Last one was this February and it was 800 pages or so, maybe more. There’s no way you can finish one of those every week. Let alone 2! :’)
DAMN RIGHTS! I’ve been eyeing ARC’s on the well-knows sites for a year now just in case :’). George R.R. Martin had books on NetGalley before so who knows! 😀 crosses fingers and creates a balloon animal with sausages

  15. Wait.. WHAT?!! there are people who haven’t heard of Drew’s blog??!?!? say it isn’t so! Ha ha!! Great post Anne… thank you for tagging me!! I’m excited to to this one if I can pick a favorite genre… hmmm…

  16. Drew walking on the beach mouhhahaahahahahahahahaha That sounds so… cold at this time of year.
So I heard you met fascinating people thanks to reading??? :p
Wow, your description of fantasy should be added on Goodreads and Wiki! Well, not the sex part xD But you’re so right when you say anything can happen with fantasy. It’s the perfect escapism genre. I’ve met Fae and helped a Prince fight his father, I saw a shapeshifter take risks to save their friends, I’ve witnessed magic and talked with a knocker!
My only problem is I haven’t always returned safe and sound from a story. I returned devastated, laughing hysterically, heartbroken and without my nails!!

    Liked by 2 people

    • Hahaha, he says he prefers the countryside anyways :’). Oh, I most certainly have!! One of them is French and addicted to strawberry tarts strokes chin. Thank you so much, haha! 😀 Yeah, the sex part ruins everything oncemore :’). EXACTLY! Hahaha, yeah, that never happens in psychological thrillers eh? 😉 😉

  17. “It brings colour to dull days and lets you escape into another world, only to return safe and sound whenever it pleases you.” AGREE 100%%%!!! I have The Name of The Wind & I was so excited to start this trilogy until I found out the author was pulling a George RR Martin smh. I learned from that mistake & refuse to do it to myself again so, I will patiently wait for the 3rd book to start the trilogy 😉
I’d say Gaiman counts in it’s own way with all of it’s magical fantastical worlds and characters 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • ❤ 🙂 Hahaha, pulling a George RR Martin is what the kids call it these days huh? :’) . But yeah, you should probably wait until the third book is at least announced officially xD. Oh, his own way alright wiggles eyebrows 😉

  21. I really love this tag, it’s so great to see everyone’s answers and love for their genre! I only read one Neil Gaiman book (Coraline), but I really like every quote by him I read and definitely want to read more of his books. Also, I love your reasons for reading, they are the best reasons ❤

    Liked by 1 person

  22. Love your answers! Did you really read all Game of Thrones and its sequels books? I worry it may take me a year to read them. Thumbs up for getting through them!! I like the fantasy books covers too and I agree with you that anything can happen in those books. Didn’t realize you do tags! I thought you don’t.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you! And yes, I did ;). I don’t know how many pages there are in total, and I don’t think I want to know XD. I know some people had a really hard time ploughing through the books and quit halfway there. All in good time! 😀 I try to keep the tags to a limit for sure. But I couldn’t pass up this one because Drew created it! 🙂

Anne, you’re killing me. I almost swallowed my nose. I SHALL POSTPONE ALL FURTHER PVE’ing UNTIL MY GENRE HAS BEEN CHOSEN! (Even though there’s no competition – Fantasy all the way!)
Thank you for the tag! I’ll start typing tonight!!
Dragons of Autumn Twilight was adorable, and The Name of the Wind is perfection. I haven’t read Magician yet, though.. It looks cute! I like the cover you included here instead of the one from Goodreads (important selling feature – good job!)
P.S. Never seen My Little Pony but that gif is wicked perfect. ♥
