Last Week on Inked Brownies

Summer Book Haul + Updates

After having been a good girl for almost 6 whole months, I caved in June and started buying books again…and haven’t read a single one of them yet due to all the ARC’s that I made my priority *sighs*. It’s a hard knock life!

Speaking of the real hard knock life, for those of you that have read the personal posts on my current circumstances: my dad’s operation was successful, but sadly, they found out that the cancer has spread to his lymph nodes. He started his first round of chemotherapy almost two weeks ago now and I’m happy to say that the side effects have been extremely mild so far. We’ve even been joking around about the strict rules he has to follow while being on the meds (which will be for 6 months). He has to flush the toilet twice every time he takes a piss and then thoroughly clean the toilet seat. Seriously, it has never been this clean in there!
The doc prescribed urea cream in case his hands start to get sore and/or he develops a rash. We both immediately said he might just as well piss on his hands then if that happens. Except that if he does, if will both cause the rash and cure it at the same time??Time for some experimenting!
The specific meds he’s on are making him lose his fingerprints as well, so he’s seriously looking into all options on becoming a successful burglar (if anyone has any tips?). But yeah, it’s still hard, unfair, and an emotional roller coaster, but thankfully, we’re keeping the soul alive.

Back to the books. Because of the aforementioned circumstances, I was forced to take a break from blogging and am still not up to full speed with it. Spending time with my family and trying to survive the summer in general have taken their toll: I’m terribly behind in my email correspondence (apologies to everyone who’s still waiting for a response, I just can’t seem to push my brain to start working at it at the moment!), and I’ve only reviewed six books in August. Then again, six books in one month with all that’s been going on? 200 (7).gif

My blogiversary was celebrated in style and I’m really happy about the amazing response that I got. Bless y’all! The winners have been picked, announced on my social media channels, and the prizes are on its sweet merry way to them as we speak.

Now on to the actual book haul!

Books that I bought:

IMG_20160902_180734846.jpg

My book subscription loot! Minus Ink and Bone. I got an ARC for the second book in the series but the publisher never sent me Book One as promised. Which turned out to be better in the end because this cover is just…RAAWR!

IMG_20160902_180513738.jpg

I bought Sons of the Devil after reading Magda’s review HERE.
In the aftermath of the last season finale of The Walking Dead, I just had to find out who gets pummeled to pieces in the end. This was my cue to finally start reading the comics. I think the books don’t mention Negan until Compendium Three, though. Plus, I already Googled it and know it’s Glenn who dies. In the book…OMG, IS IT OCTOBER YET?!

IMG_20160902_180350846.jpg

Someone on Twitter told me I should really read Betty Neels’ books. I had never heard of the woman before but apparently, she wrote a shitload of English books that are set in Holland. So naturally, I had to get my hands on some of them. Of course, 2 out the 3 books I bought aren’t set in Holland at all…/epicfail.

IMG_20160902_180431015.jpg

I got these from a thrift shop for 20 cents each or so. The first one can be translated into Women&Hormones: A Guide For Every Woman. How could I not buy such an emerald treasure (and make fun of it in my head every time I see the cover)?

Received ARC’s:

Yes, apparently Fifty Shades of Tinsel is a thing. A horrible thing. Jill and I requested it from NetGalley for the heck of it. If anyone feels like joining in on this feast of smut at its worst?!

Books that I won/have been given to me:

23546417
I won this from my blog twin Amanda@Chocolate Pages. Her review made me want to read it asap (=2017 >.>).

6558151
Given to me by my mother-in-law in the hope of getting me back into posting recipes ;). Once I fit into my jeans once more without having to lie down first, I’ll start baking again!

25334922

I won this from the brilliant Liis @Cover to Cover. Yes, I won this in April, so it technically wasn’t summer yet. I bet it was already fecking warm back then anyways, so it counts for me!

Books that I borrowed:

IMG_20160902_180849485.jpg

I borrowed these from my mother-in-law (she’s an avid reader as well). The first one is The Smoke Jumper, the second one a Dutch children’s book called The Mystery of The Pyramid, and the third one a humorous book called The Confused Guinea Pig.

And that was it! I’m sure I forgot some books again, but *shrugs*.

Have you read any/are you planning on reading any of these books?

  1. Anne your dad is a rockstar! I am so happy to hear he is fighting a good fight and I keep you in my thoughts constantly.

I think reviewing six books a month is pretty damn good if I may say so! I have also picked up Throne of Glass but overwhelmed with ARCs. I thought I was caught up until I realized I had like 5 more coming for a book tour. But I would never complain about too many books 😉

    • Bless you <3. He’s usually very down-to-earth thankfully. Except when there’s something wrong with one of our animals. He tends to cry like a baby then (don’t tell him I said that on a public blog). That’s what I thought as well! 🙂 Ha! You can never catch up. EVER!!!!! Which is okay idd ^^.

      • Yes!!! Well I am super stoked he maintains his cool. I nearly fell apart when I became ill, and then I realized it just is counter productive. Of course what you father endures is on another level I know. I am sure he has an amazing support group that can’t be beat though ❤

        Liked by 1 person

        • That’s very true! If you just wallow in self-pity you get depressed on top of it in no time. And, again, ain’t nobody got time for that ;). How and when did you become ill btw? Were you ‘just’ dizzy a lot and then had checked things out? His support group is rather small, but hopefully effective 🙂 ❤

          • It began with the headaches about a year or so ago and progressed into the vertigo and now my ears ring nonstop. My hearing is almoat nonexistent in one ear and leaving the other. Really the vertigo is the worst though. I can’t drive or walk when it happens.

            Like

            • Oh maan! I’m thinking of asking for a brain scan as well because I have the same symptoms. The tinnitus is killing me sometimes, my left ear is chronically inflamed and almost deaf now as well and the dizzy spells are scary aren’t they? I haven’t driven a car for over a year now thanks to it. But no surgery for you right?

              Liked by 1 person

            • Anne you are my twin in an eerie way!!! No surgery. Multiple scans. I have a lesion byt they think I also have advanced bilatetal Meniere’s disease. You really need to follow up. I know how debilitating it is 😣 I am sorry.

              Liked by 1 person

            • I went to the doctor’s office today because I had such an extreme bout of vertigo during the night that I had to crawl on the floor to be able to pee (not on the floor). Both my ears were almost completely deaf as well this morning. But they just don’t take anything seriously over here. I got a fucking nasal spray because my Eustachian tubes have filled up with fluids. Thing is, this is the 6th time in 2 years or so…they should really send me to a specialist :/.

              Liked by 1 person

            • Really!! Sorry but ask them next time if they have ever heard of Ménière’s disease?! I am not sure if they are referred to as ENTs (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctors there, but see if you can find one who will take you. Those ass clowns.. sigh.

              Like

            • My dad had that for a while actually (or he was diagnosed with it and they prescribed him specific meds for it as well) but magically recovered from it. Yeah, they’re called KNO’s over here :D. One of my physicians told me last year that if I get another ear infection, I would need to be sent to one an ENT. Four infections later and they still won’t give me a referral note. Ass clowns indeed…

              Like

            • He must be in relapse (your father) Meniere’s never goes away(incurable), but can lie dormant in so people for long periods. My sister was told she had it and it jever affects her, yet they think I do and I am on the floor. Maybe you can find a self reffering KNO?

              Liked by 1 person

            • Yeah, that’s what I thought, hence I already thought it was strange that he doesn’t have any symptoms anymore! Crazy illnesses. You always need a refferal because the insurance won’t cover it otherwise -.-. But I’ll cry some havoc over at the doctor’s office next week! (gonna be sick this one sighs)

              Liked by 1 person

            • Go scream at them girl!!! I was lucky to have insurance that allowed self referral so I got into a great neuro who has me headed in the right direction. But man, what a long road sigh.. Keep me posted!

            • Anne, actually.. this has really been sitting with me. You have no idea (or maybe you do) how much it has impacted me to know someone else is dealing with this! If you find out anything let me know girl. I am being scheduled to meet with an ENT Specialist at our “top dawg” hospital here. I hope I get some answers. I am driving maybe twice a week, but realistically know I need to probably give it up. Luckily my part time job is a 10 minute drive.. sigh. Hang in there!!

              Liked by 1 person

            • ❤ I don’t tend to tell a lot of people about it because it’s always waved away with “OH, it’s all between your ears”. Which funnily, it is, because IT’S MY HEAD YOU NUMPTIES! I really hope you get some answers as well! Did they ever find out what caused the lesions to be there in the first place? Or just a ‘lord knows’ kind of approach? You are definitely lucky you live that close to your work :). But I know from experience that even those 10 minutes can already be too much. And you just don’t want to pass out behind the wheel? Do you ever pass out btw? I don’t, thankfully.

              Just kidding !

Oh, that’s definitely true. My dear old friend from India went to the US to study and make his parents proud. His mother even forged a fake ID for him so he would appear younger and get easier access. But what he really wanted was to be a musician! And then he ended up working on Wall Street to make his parents proud 🙂

  7. 6 months? You go girl! I still haven’t gotten the real definition of a buying ban xD Every time I have to pick another book, I’m torn between the ARCs and my new babies. I’m looking for a sort of balance, but those poor ARCs are not reviewed before publication now, I’m a bad girl.

I’m sending lots of good vibes and kickass moves to your father (not that I want to hit him, okay??) so he can fight the shit out of that cancer ❤ My mom fought and won against two of those nasty bastards, so we have great illness kicking moves 🙂

6 books reviews sound like one of my regular months, haha! You’re doing extremely well in my humble opinion!

Hey, I’m spotting Throne of Glass in here! I hope you read it faster than Jill :p I still can’t believe you went with 50 Shades of Tinsel xD

I am wishing your father well, I hope he continues to do well during the chemo treatments and medicines. It is never easy #fuckcancer seriously. I hope you take all the time you need in order to spend it with loved ones and take a time out for yourself as well. You have been doing such a great job in keeping up with blogging but remember to always take time away from us and live! (I know I am giving you the same advice others are giving me) LOL.
I have had family members go through cancer, and while no cancer is the same, it is something that effects people nonetheless, he is a real soldier, if it be his will, he will make it through a champion! I hope you continue to keep us up to date with his news and your wellbeing.

I agree with your mom, you should start baking again, also if you want to be really creative and avoid pictures, just Youtube yourself baking ❤ lol. Easy enough?:)

This post is a few months old I think (but this means my new IN THE SPOTLIGHT feature must be working! does a little dance) and my dad is almost done with his 3rd round of chemo. 3-6 more to go, depending on how well he endures it. He started smoking again, though, which I am very pissed off about, but hey, he’s a grown man right. sings Let It Go. Thank you! ❤ My blogging schedule is basically non-existent now, I just post whenever I can. Which I’m not going to worry about too much to be honest. It’ll just give me wrinkles and I’m not ready for that yet!! (okay, I already have a few, but I’m not ready yet for more XD). Did you know 1 out of 2 men, and 1 out of 3 women get cancer these days? I thought it was absolutely shocking! (and glad I’m a woman ^^).We’re dreading his liver scan when he’s done with the chemo, but for now, we’re all just trying to live life as normally as we can (apart from all the precautions we have to take because of the chemo meds). HAha, I don’t know if I have the courage for that :D. I usually make really weird faces when being focused, lol. Thank you for this lovely comment babe! ❤

isn’t totally obvious that no matter how old your post becomes, I still manage to read them. In fact I like reading people’s older post, means I stay on their page longer XD Although your spotlight feature could also be working shrugs.
I did not know the stats for cancer, I guess it makes me happier being a female too, I never would have known this. Gives me a whole new prospective. Shit happens and sometimes we don’t have a say in it, ya know? what sucks, is we never know if tomorrow is our last day or today is our last hour. Your dad is a trooper, most people would give up, live life unhappy and depressed (which I would fall in that category if I were to have cancer) but he is doing the opposite, he is living life like he doesn’t have it, not allowing for it to define him and spending time with all of you because he is aware he doesn’t know when he won’t be able to open his eyes. I wonder how someone can be so strong during the hardest times, can come out with a smile even when they are scared and manage a positive attitude even when things aren’t so shiny.
He can do it, he can do what many people can’t, he can live… ❤ I will continue to check in on the guy 🙂 virtually! ❤ & you keep your head up too, keep on smiling because he needs that even when he smokes, he needs your smile 🙂
